My name is Megan. I grew up in New Jersey and I would say that I had a pretty normal, typical upbringing. After high school, I went to college at Montclair State University, I met a man named Keith and we started dating. We immediately became a serious couple and I thought that I had met the man that I would spend the rest of my life with. He was my best friend and meant the world to me. After we were together for nine years, we discovered that he had cancer. For the next few months I witnessed as he suffered and withered away from this illness. At only 32 years of age, he had a great life ahead of him that was cut short by this horrible disease.
After his death, I moved to Florida. I stayed at my mother’s home for a few months, but I eventually moved out on my own. I was faced with living alone for the first time in my life and I became very depressed, angry and lonely. I started shutting off the world and drinking at home, alone on a nightly basis. This went on for about four years. I felt that my life was completely hollow and meaningless. My drinking was so bad that I was losing job after job and all of my relationships. Every time I would stop drinking, I would suffer from serious withdrawals. I would try desperately to stay sober, but it never lasted more than a month or two at a time. My family became aware how bad my situation had become and realized that I needed a serious life change.
I came to the Walter Hoving Home an emotionally and physically ill woman. I was completely broken and desperate. God very quickly began to heal me, He gave me hope for my life and reasons to live. I began to build friendships and have joy and peace in my heart. I began to feel God’s love and presence in my life in a way that I could have never imagined.
God gave me the determination to complete my year at the Home and join the Emerging Leader’s program. Once I started this journey, I never looked back.
After completing the yearlong program, I interned for one year at the New York facility. God then called me across the country and for the past two years I have been a staff member at our Las Vegas, Nevada location.
