My name is Rachel Stoltzfus. I am 26 years old. I am the second of eight children. I was born and raised Amish until I was 9 years old when my parents gave their lives to Christ and decided to leave. My father currently serves as a Pastor in New Jersey so I grew up involved in many different ministries. From inner city ministry to overseas missions God has given me many opportunities to serve and learn. God has used all of these things to give me a heart for those who are hurting and broken.
I first heard of the Hoving Home while I was on a 5 month mission’s trip to Vietnam. My father called me and started telling me about this great organization that was helping women whose lives had been damaged by substance abuse. I was so impressed by what I heard that one of the first things I did when I came home was ask how I could volunteer. I started out as volunteer choir director and from my first practice I fell in love with the women and the environment that the Hoving Home sets. I have seen women change so much while going through the program here. So when I was told of a staff opening I was so excited at the opportunity to apply for the position.
I have several people in my life who have experienced addictions and I have seen firsthand the damage it can cause. I have also seen that Christ is the only true, lasting solution. I may not be able to make the choice for freedom in Christ for those I love who are still battling addictions. However, my prayer is that I can serve those who are making that choice today.
What is your favorite scripture?
Since I can’t choose just one I will say 1 John 3 and 1 Corinthians 13. One reminds me of God’s great love to make me his own. The other reminds me that his love is not like any other.
What book is on your nightstand?
My Bible and A Normal Christian Life by Watchman Nee.
What is one of your favorite memories at WHH?
Thanksgiving with the ladies. It reminded me that sometimes the smallest thing for me can mean so much to someone else.
What is your favorite food?
I love trying new food so this is always changing. Currently, it is a desert you can buy in Vietnam that is a frozen banana with coconut milk and peanuts on the outside.
What makes you laugh?
My family and little kids.
